Default Rebuilding VRO

My mechanic says the fuel pump has gone, so I'm looking at an attempt to try to rebuild the VRO.From what I've read warped housings seem to be an issue. Is it worth trying to rebuild since the kit will run 100.00 or should I just spring for a new pump?. I'm premixing fuel ,oil so I really don't need the VRO , but my mech didn't mention a reg fuel pump for my engine. He said something about the holes being there, but it seemed like it couldn't be done.
It's a mid 80's evinrude 150 v6.
I'd be doing the rebuild so any tips would be helpful.
