Default Oil spill

What a mess. I really feel for you guys down on the Gulf coast. Let's pray that BP and the government get that thing capped and the oil cleaned up.

What a mess. The media in Florida is saying the rig is just off the Florida coast. I guess it is in the most literal sense. So is Africa.
It is the ammunition the anti-drillers have been waiting for. I don't understand. They were drilling with no casing and the well came in on them??? Is that what happenned?
I hope they get it solved soon.

They are reporting locally they have"slowed it significantly" this morning.

It could impact our way of life for years if its not stopped. Already smelling the funk off of it in south Mobile County.

Going to go eat some seafood tonight..may be the last time for awhile.

What has me really pissed is this, all over Europe, the North Sea and elsewhere the Oil Co's have mandatory systems which shut the well off at the head in case of a rupture, or another disaster.
Not here, at least on the rigs a few years old, they do not have that requirement.
How freakin stupid can we be?
And, how about the two Legger in the Whitehouse, ten days before making any moves to take care of this, they still have not mobilized the EPA emergency research and reaction vessel with all the scientists on it to handle an emergency like this. It is sitting in Florida as we speak monitoring dredge materials. That is from the man who used to manage it from the EPA and when he called the head Czar there to find out why it is still sitting there with no orders he was blown off by her.
We are run by crooks and thieves, who want to promote their agenda and that is it.
Can you imagine what would be done in the lame stream media had Bush been in office.
Those poor people down there, failed again by the government, state, local and federal

I don't know for sure, but I thought I heard that it had one of those shut off valves, but it got destroyed in the explosion.

I cant help remembering back when gas was $4+ and the oil companies were making record profits they kept saying its not just the cost of production but its also exploration.....BP is gonna see just how expensive that exploration can be.

Lets not forget the true cost of that explosion. The 13(?) people that were killed that day.

And this was a state of the art rig.. new with all the most up to date safety gear. It didn't even use anchors.... kept it's position via GPS and thrusters.

I dislike (hate is a good word) our present administration. Yet, I find myself being placed in a very strange spot. I'm being forced to actually defend these dirtbags. Much has and is being made of the fact that nothing was done by our government at the very beginning... Well.. guess what?... It was NOT the governments job to do anything. BP said there was an explosion, that people were killed and that they were in control of the situation. No one knew about the broken well and the leaking oil in the beginning.. FEMA had no reason to do anything. Now they do, so lets see what they do and how they handle the situation.

I just feel so very sorry for the families of the workers that were killed. My prayers go out to them.

The emergency well valves are not located on the rig itself but on the well head.
And the oil company told the EPA at the time of the explosion that there was a very real possibility of well head leakage but would not be able to confirm immediatly due to the depth of the well (5000 ft).
But the Czarina at the EPA was busy with Earth Day and other commitments. The best equiped vessel in the world was never dispatched, which it could have been on scene in 24-48 hours tops, to date it is still sitting at anchor.
