|  mounting an outboard 
			
			Just finishing up my complete transom rebuildon my 75' V, I set it up for a 25" shaft motor. I was wondering if I should take on the job of mounting the motor ( which I don't have yet ) myself or should I pay someone to do it. I'm not sure how to determin the best height it should be, keep hearing the cavitation plate should be even with the bottom of keel. I also heard it might cavitate around turns this way. Don't know who to listen to. Any thoughts? Thanks

			Mounting the cavitation plate level with the bottom of the boat is the starting point.  Drilling the holes in the transom might be better done with the motor contacting the transom and the yoke sitting on the transom and marking the upper bolt holes and the upper portion of the lower slot holes. Initially the yoke sitting on the transom will be too low but this will allow the full range of adjustment possible from down to up. It's very easy to adjust after the initial mounting, just place a board on the ground below the foot skeg, run the trailer jack stand up till the skeg contacts the wood, loosen the lower bolts that have a slot available, remove the top ones that have fixed hole positions and use the trailer jack stand to raise or lower the front in order to raise or lower the motor. Don't forget sealant for the bolt holes, 5200 isn't overkill either.

			I'd show you a picture of mine but it's got a jackplate also. This is the typical end result. Most motors are almost never mounted all the way down or all the way up.

			I just remembered a slight problem we had when we changed mine from 20 to 25". The back splash prohibited us from drilling the mounting holes in the regular location for the lower bolts. We ended up working this problem out with the jack plate by drilling the lower holes a little bit lower than normal and drilled the upper ones in the correct location. This will prohibit the normal range of adjustment if mounting the outboard straight to the transom but worked out fine with the jack plate. Measure yours and see if you might have any problems getting the fender washers below the back splash. The "normal" mounting holes locations for the outboard from the top of the transom are at about 2" and 9 3/4".

			Or you could have MJ come over and mount it.....  Might void your warranty though.

			I just called the marina and they say I good to go!!  Cost a pretty penny to make sure all is good!! But well worth it IMO! I can do most maintenance for now on, just wanted to get it all done the right way the first time! I going home tomorrow and will pick up Thur or Friday!
