| Accident report...

In case I have not mentioned it, a few weeks ago two snorkel divers ( Father and Son ) were run over by a boat in Culebra Island, I was there, really bad day. The old man lost one leg, both got hurt bad. The Captain of the boat, denied taking the hurt couple in his boat, even when everybody was screaming for help. Another boater took the guys to the local hospital. Now the Captain says the divers did not have markings, so he never saw them. Well, just remember that there are things floating in the water ALL THE TIME, maybe a person who has fallen from a moving boat. WE ALL must be aware of that and keep our eyes wide open and ahead of us 100% of the time for just in case. Whoevers fault it was, I could not ever sleep again if I hurt somebody with my boat, much less ride a boat again. SO, please I beg ALL to remember this accident and learn from it. And if you dive or snorkel, take a DIVERS marking with you, one for each diver, and drag it around ALL the time.

I agree. Last month had a snorkler killed by a pontoon boat w/ 12 people onboard. They got his body onboard and traveled 5 miles to a local marina. It was bad enough, but there were 6 children on the boat. He was within his dive flag. The guy said he just didn't see him.

That kinda thing hapens more than one would think. Here In Stuart,Fl a diver was run over,..loss both legs to a DOCTOR !!!!,...who'd just left the boat ramp. In stead of stopping to help he took off back and called a lawyer to meet him. The diver had a flag but, the Doc was too busy to look where he was goin'.

Our nearshore waters, inland rivers and sounds are typically so murky that no one ever dives in them. The tides rip through and keep everything stirred up. Well, at least that's what I thought for many years, until a friend and I were heading up the ICW, going through a no wake zone at idle speed, when about 40 feet ahead and right near a channel marker up popped a scuba diver's head. He looked around for just a few seconds and quickly submerged. It was one of those, "did I just see what I thought I saw?" moments. I looked at my friend just as he began to say, "Did you see THAT?" No boat anywhere nearby, and certainly no diver flag. To this day I still have no idea what in the heck he was doing diving out in that murky creek. |
