New trailer laws for MA.

Going to have to have a Inspection sticker for trailers with rating of 3000# and above.
What have you guys done about titles and stuff?? I bet 75% here have no titles including me!!
I also guess this means I am going to have to repair the breaks to my trailer also

and they need to be fixed complete!!

Commercial vehicles, trailers and converter dollies will be subject to the enhanced Mass. Commercial Motor Vehicle Inspection beginning 10/1/08.

This inspection will be the equivalent to the annual Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) "DOT" inspection. When your vehicle/trailer receives this enhanced state inspection beginning 10/1/2008, you will not be required to obtain an annual "DOT" inspection.

Single, full, or semi-trailers, used in commerce, that have a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) over 3,000 lbs or commercial vehicle/trailer combinations with a gross combined weight rating (GCVWR) of over 10,000 lbs will be subject to this new requirement, as will all heavy duty motor vehicles (over 10,000 lbs GVWR) and converter dollies.

TRAILERS AND CONVERTER DOLLIES IN USE AFTER JANUARY 1, 2009 MUST BE IN COMPLIANCE WITH THIS NEW INSPECTION.

In CT they don't have titles for trailers but they do a VIN verification. Of course, the VIN is often printed on a sticker which has worn off many years before. Get a set of metal letter and number stamps and stamp the VIN on the trailer near the sticker or where the sticker was.

That would be a great Idea if I had a number!! Here in MA most trailers come with the boat and one way or another the title has got lost along the line, so we just say they are home made and under 2000# and we good to go.

But unless the cops are blind there is no way I can drive by them and they not know my boat is over 3000#

So I am not sure how they are going to approach this?? I am not goingn to be alone in this matter thats for sure!!

Why is a boat trailer considered a "commercial" trailer? in fl trailers don't always have a title, some have a MSO (Manufactors statement of origin) & we are required to have tags. this sounds like a way for the state to raise revenue.........

MJ, welcome to my world buddy. I've got two trailers. One has no title nor registration (for the V...) and the other has title but no registration because the brakes have to be functioning to get the registration sticker for the license plate.

Wow that sucks. At least they dont have emisson testing on boats yet. Can you say good by to 2 strokes.

It's the 'used in commerce' statement that will save you. Unless you are selling stuff from the trailer or using it to transport stuff you are going to sell, or getting paid to transport stuff for others, you should be ok. This looks like a commercial vehicle regulation to me.

on the Hull Truth, there was a posting about NC trying to pass a law for anual trailer inspections, I didn't find out if it passed or was repealed, anyone know?

Yes after researching more I have found out this is for Commercial! Thank God I was starting to panic!

I do fall under the rules as I transport my fish to market in my boat on that trailer, butI not going to worry about it!!

But I am sure with everything going on in this state it just a matter of time before there is a new fee!

I glad you dodgin' the bullet...being a long time supporter (LOL) of trailer brakes, I know you were lookin' forward to spendin' time and money gettin' those fixed...
