| Oceanpro burns all the fuel

I know these are known as fuel hogs, but I think mine's burning way too much. It gets about 1.5 gallons/mile. Motor is a 97 200HP Evinrude OceanPro. Hard to believe it could burn that much. Is there any way it could be dumping it out the exhaust? I heard that if the carbs are dirty they can dump fuel into the bore through the "choke" ports, but that's not happening on mine.

damn...thats not good at all...they really arent too bad of fuel hogs compared to the others. it might not be the engine. it might be the prop or the boat.

A 97 200HP OCEAN PRO will burn 15-18 GPH at a 4000 RPM cruise. Make sure your propped right, and there are no dings in it. Also make sure the carbs are clean and the floats are set right. And total timing is pretty important for max economy, as well as the link and sync. The total timing should be 17-19 at 5000 RPM's(I like 18-18 1/2 on mine), and 20 can cause some issues with overheating and piston galling.

I may be wrong here, but if you run 4000 rpms let's say at 25 mph and you burn 15-18 gph, wouldn't that be 1.66 to 1.38 mpg? At 22 mph, that'll be 1.44 to 1.22 mpg. I'd say you're not too far off the mark. I had a 150 Merc and never hit 2 mpg.

Unfortunately the 93+ OCEANRUNNERS are THIRSTY! The finger port motors make excellent power, and are very reliable. But them finger port motors have a very restrictive exhaust, and the finger ports waste more fuel during the overlap period. I know the earlier(88-92) are still thirsty, but not quite as wasteful.

The tach doesn't work right now but the boat will do about 40mph full throttle, a little more on glass. The prop seems to be right and it has no dings. With no tach I'm not sure how fast it goes at 4000 rpm, but I think it's over 25 mph. I ordered on of those manuals on CD off ebay so I could fix the tach but it was unreadable. Ordered a real printed manual and it should be in soon. Guess if I can fix it by the weekend this gives me a reason to go to the lake and try it out. I'll check the timing and floats once the manual comes in. I think I once read something about the fuel pump seal leaking fuel straight into the crankcase.

Half.com Was supposed to be in excellent condition. I think the seller was high when making the listing, evidenced by the marijuana leaf I found between the pages. Usually books I buy off there are better than described. This one's still readable but dirty and water stained.

I have a 1996 loop 225 Ocean Pro with a 19 pitch ss Viper prop (in average condition) and I get on the average 2 mpg while cruising. My top speed with 4 adults, 2 cases of beverage, 60 lbs of ice and 40 gallons of gas is 48mph and thats at 6000 rpms (which was probably 1 mpg). I usually cruise between 3400 - 3800 rpms at a speed of 24-28 mph. I think a 21 pitch would be a perfect prop for me since I don't pull skiers or wakeboarders. I have not made the investment on a new prop since I'm thinking of re-powering with an f-150. Hope this info will help.
