Default long or short shaft 9.9 johnson kicker?

gentleman has a 9.9 1978 johnson outboard for sale. do i need long or short for 20 v cuddy, & is this motor any good, am not outboard knowledable. thank you ! richard

I have a short shaft Johnson 9.9 on mine and I regret it. With a hinged bracket you can get the prop where it needs to be, but it puts the cowling too close to the water level and when the conditions are a little rough, the motor can submerge. Hold out for a long shaft!
