| Another Stupid Question. . . . .

ok, here goes. . . . alpha 1 outdrive, oil drain plug on front of bullet to drain gear oil. up towards top of outdrive, plug that says oil vent. is this where the new gear oil goes? when i pulled drain plug on bottom, it really dribbled out. i would have thought there would be more pouring out. not that much. should i let it drain overnight? should i use fresh gear oil to flush it through? ferm? spare? anybody?

You have to remove both the lower and upper plugs to get the oil to drain out with any speed. There is only a small passage to allow the oil to go from the bottom to the top and for the oil to run back out. And yes you need to fill it from the bottom up to get the air out of the lower. The one marked vent is just that, it let's air in to drain it and air out when you fill it.

The plugs usually have a fiber washer on them, and you use a gear oil pump that screws onto a quart bottle to pump the oil up through the drive until it starts ta run out of the vent hole. Then pull the pump hose out and screw the plug in, then replace the vent plug. I bought my oil pump on a bottle of marine oil ( Penzoil) from Wal-mart for around 8 bucks.

MAKE SURE TO USE THE RIGHT STYLE SEAL! Some do use an O-ring, and some use a tapered fiber seal, while others use a plastic seal, and most use a flat fiber gasket. Look to see what you have now, and then replace with the same. And the gear lube pumps are available most anywhere, and is the easiest and best method to refill them.

there are no washers on the plugs but looks like a small groove for an o ring or washer of some sort.
