Default Yamaha corrosion

I'm hoping you guys can help me decide whether or not to scrap the engine on my new boat. Its an 85 yamaha 225 with the typical corrosion issues. If the compression test is bad then its gone but if its ok then the choice gets tougher. The lower unit has a pretty big crack which after lots of research Ive found is pretty typical and can be welded, jb welded or just left alone. The steering tube (if that what its called) not the tilt tube is corroded pretty badly as well. See the pics and let me know what you all think. Is she a keeper or a scrapper?

thats some pretty ugly corrosion. I have seen lower units like that before. Salt builds up around the bearing carrier and swells the case till it cracks. If compression is good I say run it till it pukes. But you do have all winter to look for a good replacement though. keep an eye on ebay for a clean used motor.

Default Yamaha corrosion

It looks like that motor has been left in salt water in the down position most of it's
life. I have seen people do this, don't know why they do it, what they get is
a motor that looks like yours.

thats about normal for a 25 year old Yamaha around here. Weld up the crack and run it till it pukes. Keep a look out for a replacement while you are running it.

Good advise by these guys above, I can tell you from a non mechanics eye that looks bad, and I have seen much worse here, including on a V20 once, a 150 Yammie. That motor is still running hard from when I first saw it three years ago when I thought it was a dead man standing.

I have an '85 that has a split gearcase too. Ray Neudecker, a Yamaha guru on Scream & Fly advised me that eventually it would let go and spit out its guts so I'm keeping it for a parts motor. The steering pivot on that motor does look gnarly. There is supposed to be an anode that bolts to the bottom of the transom brackets and goes under the coiled hydraulic line. From your pictures it looks like the PO didn't put one on which might explain the corrosion.

I'm curious exactly what motor you have. Can you read the ID plate? If it says "Special" then it is a V6 Special and is 220HP and should have a computer module on the back of the block. Otherwise I believe the biggest motor Yamaha made in '85 was a 200HP and it would just have 6 coils on the back of the block. If you have the "Special" then be aware that you need to run at least 91 octane fuel in it. Also, do you know what carbs it has? There are Teikei single float and Nikkei dual floats that were used back then.

If you decide to sell let me know what you want for it. I have a buddy that is looking for a not too expensive motor for his boat. Since I have experience and a good stockpile of parts for the older Yamahas he his leaning that way.
