direct injection vs. carborator?

Any preferences ? I'm looking at older (1990's-early 2000's) 150-200 johnson/evinrude motors. Any suggestions? Seems to be a few out there for decent prices.

91+ 150/175 carbed engines are great engines. The 97-00 150/175 FICHTS are a NO NO by most acounts as they are known to have HIGH rates of failures in them. 01-early 02 in the direct injected EVINRUDES can be hit or miss, but 03+ are said to be good engines. 200/225 carbed engines are all pretty good, just thirsty. 93+ though in the 200/225's are known to suffer from block rot as these are the closed deck engines and salt builds up between the gaskets and blocks in them and rots em out.

as they explained it to me in Yamaha school. Imagine standing beside a cliff, your two steps back from the cliff, thats carburated, take a step closer to the cliff, thats fuel injected, take another step and dangle you foot over the edge, thats direct injected. The closer you get to the "edge" the more fuel efficient you are, but at the expense of margin of error.

Cool... thanks guys! I def. don't mind paying for a little more gas considering we won't be using the boat a ton, and i'd like to be further from that cliff... lol Any years better than others for the carb engines? Any major difference between evinrudes and johnsons?

Prior to about 98 they were called JOHNNY-RUDES for a reason, they were identical under the cowling. 88-91 for the 200/225 is my personal favorite of them, and the 91+ 150/175 60 degree looper is another one you can't go wrong with. If you're not in a hurry and don't mind going slower then don't rule out the 88+ 140HP V-4. The earlier 86-87 200/225's were actually the best on fuel, but they would have one foot hanging over the cliff using spares comparison as they made there HP with aggressive porting whereas the 88+ made it with more displacement.
