I've seen the little 3-ways on smaller motors where I suppose it diverts the water for a temp sensor but that doesn't look familiar to me. I KNOW Ferm and Skools will be on the scene shortly. Hold tight big guy, help is on the way! ;)

under 3000 rpms it lets water run from the midsection to the heads to cool them evenly at low rpms but at or around 3000 rpms it opens to let the extra water from the faster turning pump go back out the midsection thru the exhaust to cool the exhaust better at higher rpms and hotter motor exhaust temp. it was only needed on southern motors you can put blank caps and remove it if you wanted. better yet trade it off the spare motor or just open it up replace the 2 o-rings inside it. easy fix.

ok tool time
this is a V4 motor but same exact part as V6 here's the valve ![]() here's where it gets water from when it's under 3000 rpms ![]() here's where it is going to under 3000 rpm ![]() here's where it goes above 3000 rpm out to the pisser on the lower housing from the above pic ![]() here it is under 3000 ![]() here's above 3000 ![]() first you need to remove below screws and nuts ![]() ![]() then GENTLY pull out on the throttle arm till pin is out of the valve ![]() now GENTLY pull out till accessible ![]() now mark a location of the center part to out side so you replace correctly then pull out slide pin ![]() then pull out the insert carefully ![]() heres the valve taken out ![]() clean this part very well ![]() here's the inside of the valve with a seal in this ones case some have o-ring ![]() you can grease the rubber seal if in good shape and then light grease on the valve and reinstall usually stops the leak. or you can use the cap covers as below better to use the bypass system

I ended up replaceing that valve on my V-4. I had re-sealed it several times with no luck, it had a groove cut in it from the years of service. That valve also bypass's the T-stats for high RPM opersation. It puts pressure on the diaphrams to make the T-stats seal off and bring it up to 160 at low RPM's. Like SKOOLS said, around 3000 RPM's the valve diverts the water pressure to allow the cooling water to bypass the T-stats and the engine temps drop. If you had a temp guage you could watch the temp drop when the pressure is diverted. The higher temps help these loopers to idle better and burn the fuel easier.
