Your right on some of the V's you have to remove the motor or at least unbolt it to move over.

But it sounds to me thet the tube may be getting rusty and like it or not you may have to remove it??

You can try to test the helm unit to see if thats the problem? Undo the cable and turn the wheel so the cable comes out. then try to turn the motor and see if it is better. If it is then the problem is the helm, if not the it is time to get the cable off the motor!

As for thr screw thing I have been using one for years!!

But that said, My boats have always had brackets or were I/O so I just pull the cable out of the motor every fall, clean grease and wrap in a trash bag. In th spring I clean the tube and put all back tyoghter again.

Check these posts,
there are some good ideas on steering.

http://www.wellcraftv20.com/cgi-bin/...690716;start=0

I think the nut you are reffering to is the Lube nut?

I had to take my steering cable out of the engine
and clean the tube, it was a beatch, but mine was completely frozen.
Your s is free yet , so it won't be that bad a job to
install teh nut.

Does it steer hard under way or just on the trailer? Mine steers harder to one side than the other when under way with motor trimmed all the way down. I trim it up to the sweet spot and she turns like a greasy door knob both directions! :D

It makes a big difference how it is trimmed. Or at least in my opinion it does. I can usually trim up for about 3 seconds and steering gets real smooth and easy. Mess around with the trim while underway and see if you notice a difference.
