Default Stator question

I had a problem this fall, I was out and my engine started acting up, hard to start and felt like it was only running on 3 cylinders, I think it could be the switch box or the stator, when I started it on land it ran good,no problems. I know that the stator can go in and out, if I check the stator with a multimeter and it was running good at the time will it show on the test that it is no Good? Or does it have to be running bad when I test it to show that it is bad. Any info would be great
Thank you
P.s. I am going to change the switch boxes this weekend.

Hi spare, it's a 1988 150 Mercury outboard blackmax. Do you need the serial number? I'm taking my baby home this weekend and am going to replace the switch boxes and am going to test the stator .

The last time I was out I came back on I think 3 cylinders so when I stated it on land it sounded like I t was running good, I know the stator and switch boxes can do that .

if its missing on two cylinders, its the trigger. if it misses on three its the switch box. If it misses above 2000 rpm its the stator. BTW, if you replace the switch box, replace both of them

If North Carolina ever regains some sense and elects a Republican Governor, I may move that far North, but I'm happy in South Carolina for now. BTW, don't tell anyone in your area SC is a good place to move, Ohio already figured it out and is ruining the place
