What can you guys tell me about a 1986 Mercury 135. I have a lead on one with around 250 hours.

should be a 2.0l carb motor. Good solid engine. 2 Liter engines are steel sleeved, so they are a little more forgiving than the chrome bore 2.4 liter engines. If you can find some 2.oL 150 carbs, it an easy upgrade. Disconnect the oil system and premix

Like Spare said, 2.0L carbed engine. I believe 86 used the 16 amp charging system which many weren't to fond of. My 81 had the 9 amp, and that sucker couldn't keep up with ANY electrical loads. The later engines had the 40 amp system, and it has some output to it. Theres ALOT of parts interchangeability with those engines as well. With a little work, you can swap it from a 135 to a 150, change a 9 amp charging system to a 16 or 40 amp system, and so on. Ignition parts can be swapped for many years as well IIRC. Some complain they were fuel hogs, but my 81 2.0l was very gentle on fuel until you got on it.

FWIW, I have an '89 150 and I'm really happy with it. I have no idea how many hours are on it (maybe a million?), but compression is 120 on all 6 (knock on wood!). I removed the VRO and premix (with helpful advice from folks on here, like spareparts). I never go full throttle, but my V20 will do 36mph if it's calm out.
