Default engine loads up with oil

+150 mercury 1988 sometimes its very hard or impossible to start my engine the reason i think is because when she does start she smokes alot like i just winterized her , i took it to a mechanic and he replaced the pulse valve last year, she was good for a couple of times but the last time i started her it was the same thing loaded up with oil, the oil injection is still on but im thinking of diconnecting it but what would cause it to happen again, i would like to keep the oil inj, system connected but i dont want to have this problem again, thanks for any help,
I also have to screw down my access hatch in the middle of my boat cause the screws are not holding . I was wondering what is under neat when i lift it up I had it fixed about 8 years ago but the guy did a crappy job
and im waiting for my trim assembly unit to replace thr one thats on there now , that one is no good
B--break
O--out
A---another
T--- thousand
1978 wellcraft steplift i love her so dont tell me to get another one please. its a personal thing

The most common cause of what your talking about with an oil injected MERC is overfilling the oil injection tank. When you shut the engine off with an overfull oil tank, it will push oil back up into the crankcase through the hose used to pressurize the oil injection tank. My flats boat used to do this because the oil tank didn't set level, so you couldn't fill it up but to about 80% without it pushing oil back into the crankcase when you shut it off.

NEVER fill a MERCURY tank to the top or else it will do exactly as your describing. You need to leave an inch or so of space below the tubes that send crankcase pressure to the tank from the engine.

ferm or spare can confirm this, but i think there is an adjustment screw on the oil pump. i will check my manual for the specs.

You can adjust the linkage to the set marks if they aren't aligned. The oil pump should only flow when it is being turned, when it is stationary it takes ALOT of pressure to flow oil through it.

step, according to my manual,v-135 thru v-175 ser#c221500 & up,

flow specs
2.0 @1500RPM w/ oil pump link arm CONNECTED = 6.8 cc + or- 10% in three minutes
@1500RPM w/ oil pump arm DISCONNECTED = 17cc + or - 10 % in three minutes

2.4 @ 1500 RPM w/0il pump arm CONNECTED = 8.2cc + or - 10% in three minutes
@ 1500RPM w/oil pump DISCONNECTED = 19.2cc + or - 10% in three minutes

you check it by running the engine on PREMIX and disconnecting the clear tube going to the fuel line tee from the oil pump. block off the oil inlet in that tee and dump the oil in a measuring cup. kinda a pia, but you might be over oiling.

out of the 5 or 6 I have ever checked, i've never found one out of specs.

but you never know, if you want to try it, pm me your e mail and i'll try to scan the page and send to you.

thanks for all the advice, the only thing that has me confused is that i own the engine for about 18 years and only recently i am having this problem and i do the same thing all the time i all ways topped off the oil tank during off season, i think im just going to get rid of the system and premix, i also have a 50 merc that is premixed and she never gave us a problem , and you know when i will have the problem, when im getting ready to go out and she doesnt start, probably have my wife with me and she doesnt come often she will think i had this all planned

LOL If it ain't smoking add oil, to reduce friction but only to a point. I have never seen one over oil either. If you 86 the oil infection and premix you will still be a smoking at idle. I only mention this as: a premix of 40:1 or 50:1 at idle is smoking a lot by today's standards.. Ask me how I know..
