Default rebuilding outboard..... how complicated?

On a scale of 1 to 10 how hard is it to rebuild an older OMC outboard. I would never attempt it I'm just curious.

And the second question is how much will it cost for the average DIY rebuild?

if you have good basic mechanical skills and a good factory service manual, you could rebuild one with no problem. You will need a machine shop that is familial with outboard engines if it needs any machining. If your machine shop doesn't do them on a regular basis, find one that does. As far as cost, it all depends on what it needs. How many cylinders are bad? What kind of shape is the crank in? I've seen people repair outboards by replacing only the pistons that needed it, but if you want to rebuild it an do it right, it gets more expensive
