Default kicker/trolling motor

Hey guys

I'm starting to look around for a kicker/trolling motor for my V20 CC. For a variety of reasons I would prefer a four stoke.

I troll for stripers and occasionally for trout and such on the lake. I’m thinking a 10 horse would do fine.

What do you think, is a 10 horse adequate for what I want to do??

Thanks for any input.

Joe

On the freshwater impoundments here in Jersey 9.9 hp is the max horsepower. I have a 9.9 suzuki two stroke mounted on my 85 V20 and it pushes it fine, works good for trolling too. If I was using solely as a trolling and auxillary motor for the salt then I would go to at least a 20-25 horse. Would fight the currents and tides better and push the boat to approx 15-18 mph. JMHO

Nowadays with the newer 4 strokes I think they make a "high output" 9.9hp 4-stroke that has more thrust than the traditional 9.9hp 2 strokes. It would probably do anything you'd ever need it to do.

My 1975 9.9hp Johnson pushes my V-21 to 7 mph and has decent thrust to fight a little current.

Yamaha has the high thrust:

Also, one review I just read states that:

When you need an extra measure of muscle, Yamaha High Thrust Four Strokes give you up to twice the thrust of a comparable two stroke. *

Thanks guys

I need to find out what the restrictions are for my neigboring lakes and ponds. I was reading about the hight output 9 horse motors, they go for about 2500 bucks.

Hey bassarama,

There is a great article at the following website. Its not a V20 but alot of information:

http://www.continuouswave.com/whaler...aT8Kicker.html

I am considering installing a Yamaha hi-thrust kicker with electric start, tilt/trim, shift as in the article. I just need to convince my wife!!! Good luck geekie!!!

I had a Yamaha 9.9 4 stroke high thrust on my 22' Grady White and it did an excellent job for trolling duty. ;)
