just got back from the OBX, can't say how it is in the summer(I don't get to vacation in the summer), but its a neat place to visit anytime. If you've never been, its pretty neat. Be cautioned, you will do some driving once you're there is you want to see the sites. We stayed at a friends house in Kitty Hawk. its about 75 miles South to Ocracoke from there. While having a boat along would have been nice, its not unnecessary for this area, it has plenty of sites to see, especially if you're into light houses.

Spare's right about OBX!!....it's an adventure land in and of itself!!...still a LOT of wild, undeveloped coast out there...

Also you can look into Beaufort (bo-fort)....Hi-Speed Tour Boat operates outta there and wild horses (see also at OBX) and light house at Lookout Point...

And look into the Southport/Oak Island area for quaint shops and great restaurants...just south of Wilmington...ALL the areas Spare and I have mentioned have GREAT SEAFOOD restaurants, fishing charters and plenty to do for the family...I hear what Spare says, but given a choice of boat/no boat, if possible, I'd have a boat at any of these!!...

Ocracoke is probably my favorite spot. Its pretty quiet and layed back with plenty of great resturants and shops you can walk to. If you go to Ocracoke take or rent bicycles, theres alot of history to see there. Theres miles of beautiful, clean beaches to drive on and great surf fishing everywhere. We usually stay on the Silver Lake where most hotels have boat docks that can accomadate larger boats. The people are very friendly and willing to help you in any way.
We spend a week in Kitty Hawk every summer and thats great too! Lots of good eats and plenty of great fishing on the surf and the piers. Stop by Jennettes pier, its 1000ft. long and is really impressive. If you stay anywhere bewteen Kitty Hawk and Ocracoke you'll enjoy the area.
Last summer we stayed at Surf Side, close to Jennettes pier for my birthday where my wife bought me a plank on the pier. Its really nice!

The entire coastline of NC is B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L. The only place where you would go wrong is here in Wilmington. It is WAAAAAYYYYYY to crowded in the summer, even for us locals. Anywhere else is unbeatable!
