Hey guys, I,m still on the hunt for a new outboard and I'm looking at a freshly rebuilt '98 Mercury 150hp 25" shaft motor. I've always been a Johnson/Evinrude guy and don't know much about these motors. Any opinions? Also does anyone know how much they weight? (wanna throw it on a bracket) Thanks

My V-20 came with a 97 or 98 Merc 150 on it when I bought it.
Once I got it to stop overheating it ran nice (the previous owner apparently tried to dig clams with it, it was FULL of sand). I think it pushed her 43 or 44 mph but it was mounted way too low, you would probably get 45-47 on a bracket. I took it off and sold it cause I had my Johnzuki to put on the V so I didn't use it much. The Merc boiz will be along soon with the weight specs for you I'm sure.

Anywhere from 390-425 pounds for a 150 MERC. Depending on shaft length, model, efi or carb, feeshin motor or performance motor, 2.0L or 2.5L. There were quite a few different 150's made, so there are some variables there. I have an 81 and a 95 150, the 81 is a 2.0L and the 95 is a 2.5L. The 2.0L is great on fuel, but a little lacking off idle to mid range. The 2.5L is STRONG at ANY point in the RPM range, but drinks fuel like no tommorrow
. Some were better than others, but for a 150 I like the 2.0L engines. Both are reliable, but the 2.0l seems to be better on fuel and a little lighter. Just ditch the oil injection as the plastic crank gear is failure prone.

O.K., Alittle more info. It is an "offshore" model. I talked to the guy today and he is not very mechanically inclined, but thats not a bad thing because every little problem with the motor was taken care of at a reliable shop in our area. I won't have a chance to look at the motor till this weekend. Is it gonna be fuel injected? carburated? I don't know till I see it. He said that it doesn't seem to be charging the batteries. Is this an easy fix? I am imbaressed at how little I know about Mercs.

A 150 offshore still leaves alot of questions, you need the serial number off of it to find out more. Not charging could be expensive, stators and regulators are not cheap on the MERC's but none of them really are. Always check the simple stuff first(fuses and connections), and then go from there. Being an offshore 150 though it is most likely a 2.5L carb motor, but could be a 2.0L or a 2.5L EFI.

first thing is to get a volt meter on the battery while running the engine se if it matches the one on trhe dash if not the dash volt meter is no good if your not charging change the rectifier thats east then the regulator
but first before you do anything check all the connections to make sure there tight and clean even on the batterys

I have several complete 40 amp ignitions for that motor. You can usually tell if the voltage Regulators have been smoked just looking at them. Let me know what you need before I pack it all up and move it to MA . . . next month.

Thanks for the info. everyone. Also, thanks Big shrimp for the parts offer...But the motor is a no go. It was in a lot rougher shape than advertised and it looks as if he paid the shop the bare minimum that he had to in order to sell a running motor. So, the search continues.

Hey Overboard - I just bought a 1995 Evinrude 225 (412 hours) with a bum lower unit. I was going to put that powerhead on the 1995 Evinrude 200 that I have in my garage. I don't know if you would be interested, but I should have it all together in a few weeks.
I have binnacle controls, rigging, 18ft cables, oil tank, 2 props, and a tach. If you haven't bought anything . . . you might want to consider it. I was thinking of listing it for around $2800 - $3000. This is the body of the 200 . . . sorry I don't have a better picture.

Well . . . I swapped the lower unit, shift shaft, starter and put in new tstats last night. The 225 is ready to roll :) Tomorrow I'm going to start it on a hose in the driveway. It'll go on craigslist, ebay, and coastside next week sometime. Pm me if you are interested.
