Default 135 Johnson?

Hey guys, I'm looking into a 2001 135 hp Johnson outboard. Does anyone have any experiance or opinions about these motors? Also what kind of performance could I expect with this motor on a bracket? Any info would be appreciated.

I personally think that much under a 150hp is marginal power for a V20. Sure many do use less and have decent results. I just think that the motors work a little bit harder thereby shortening their lifespan.
Of course this is just my opinion.

i tend to agree with cb, but a 01 135 would be about the same as a mid 80's 150, so it might not be so bad. i had a 19 ft mako with a 115 and it was underpowered so i would be cautious. like most things in life there is no substitute for cubic inches..

i may be wrong, but isn't the 135 a comercial model looper? Something like a derated 150?

I don't think so spare. Not with the '01 models. I might be wrong too though.

According to the BRP catalog, it is a V4 looper. Should have plenty of power for a V-20. You have to remember that the 90 degree loopers have GOBS of torque. It won't be no speed demon, but if propped correctly will give good milage and adequite performance.

Well, it at least confirms that it's not a derated 150. 150's are six cylinders.

I just removed the '89 115 Evinrude that came with the motor. (I blew it up) I was never happy with the 115 on the boat, but it's what I had and it worked. I thought maybe a newer 135 HP motor on a bracket would be more to my liking. I origionally set out to find a 150hp for the boat but the price is right on this motor and it has been well taken care of. Am I settling too much? Does this model have a good reputation? All things I'm unsure about.

From the catalog it appears to be the same basic engine as the 120-140 LOOPERS. The 90 degree loopers have been around since 85, the biggest change they went through was a displacement increase in 88 to a larger bore. They are known by the commercial guys as the die-hards. They are tough! And will rarely leave you stranded if taken care of. I RUN THE SH!T out of my 140 on my bowrider, and it just keeps running better and better. There are a few members here with the same basic engine on there V's, and they seem happy from what I remember from older posts. I know my bowrider runs just as fast with my 85 140 as an identical boat with a 95 150 SUZUKI SUPER SIX BASS edition does(53MPH). It will be a BIG change versus a 115HP cross-flow, as well as better on fuel.
