Default cold motor

Hey guys, in the post for water in the oil I was not getting temp in the motor and it was putting condensation in the motor/oil. I found that I was having trouble with water bypassing the thermostat. I got it fixed. I found that the Seloc book tells you too put the gasket down on the engine/intake side and then install the thermostat and palce the housing over it. I talked to Spareparts and he was telling me that there's a rubber washer that fits around the thermostat and you fit it up in the thermostat housing.

I tried that and the thermostat wouldn't open because it was sitting up in the housing and the water from the intake wouldn't couldn't reach the bottom of the sensor. I understand that this is how most of them work but under my thermostat gasket I had a recessed ring that the thermostat sits in and the gasket goes over it to the housing. I placed it in there this way and now my thermostat works great and I get temperature in the motor.

AS I SAID they way Spare told me to do it is correct but for some reason mine had a recess in the intake housing and that's how mine works.

SPARE is still the man but mine is just different.

Yea I sure will, I have a coasty for a neighbor and he's flying the coast every few days training and looking for the fish for me. When they get close to Oregon inlet and farther south then I'LL let you know. Thanks again, sometimes you just have to talk it out to figure it out.

Anytime you want to go fishing my way (Oregon inlet or Va bch) let me know and you have a place to stay and a boat.

They all have a recess in the intake, GM cast them that way for street use. You don't want to run them that way in marine though. When your running along at a cruise, there is to much water pressure on the backside of the T-stat and it will cause the T-stat to not always open. The marine engines are designed to constantly circulate through the block in a raw water cooled configuration. This is to keep the cold incoming water from cracking the the block. When you install the T-stat direrctly into the intake, everytime it opens the engine will suck all of that extra cold raw water straight in without it being able to mix with the already heated water. I shipped out that housing to you, run it and I'll guarantee you it will work. Worked great on the last engine except at idle. The ALPHA's pump just didn't have enough to flow a BRAVO housing at idle.

Thanks Therm, How much do I owe you? Please let me know. I'll probably need to ask how to install because when I installed mine the way you and Spare said (unless I didn't understand) I couldn't get any water into the motor. If you get a chance explain it to me again or send me to a previous post.
Thanks again

The red arrow shows the groove in the housing, and the blue one shows the alignment tab that holds the sleeve. Put the T-stat in and then slide the sleeve in. The gasket inside of the housing that the T-stat rides against isn't that old, you'll just need a new gasket for the intake side.

I think so, I'll find out for sure tomorrow, I'm going fishing at Rudee. After Therm sent me the housing for a Mercury and I saw how that one was configured, I started cleaning mine up and found a groove cut in mine that had been hidden by rust. I cleaned it up and was able to put my flat "O" ring gasket around my thermostat and seat it into that groove in my housing. Thats how mine is suppose to be held in place. I haven't had time to run it but I'll find out tomorrow with a little fishing mixed in.

I'll let you know for sure after tomorrow. Thanks for asking.

Therm= I'll send you something for the housing, I figure I'll or one of my friends will need it sometime. Hows the moving going?

I Won't Find Out Today As I Hoped, I Left Out This Morning And The Farther North I Got, I Found Black Ice. I Finally Turned Around Up At The State Line Between Nc & Va Because Of A Accident. I'm Glad I Did As I Was Coming Home Running Slow I Hit A Patch And It Took Me 3 Lanes Of Traffic (turn Lane Between A 4 Lane Road) To Get The Truck And Boat Straightened Out.

Both Roads Leading To Va Are Closed Now Due To Multiple Accidents.

DID YOU GET TO FISH OR JUST PLAY? ANYWAY JUST BEING OUT ON THE WATER IS NICE.
