Default Brass Drain Plug Sleeve Removal Help

The brass sleeve in the transom drain is not in good shape. On the water side the flange has become brittle and is half missing.

Before I go messing is there any special way to get this brass sleeve out? Seems like I remember someone else removing one - MJ maybe.

Any tips or tricks or just un-flange one end and beat it out?

I use a 1 " hole saw. Moeller sells the flaring tool and the replacement tubes. I usally don't go back with the tube. I just remove the old tube, let it dry out real good, goop it up, covering all teh exposed wood with resin, epoxy, or 5200. After it drys, i use the garboard style that goes on the outside of the hull with the screw in plug

I got rid of the tube, epxoy the sides of the hole and added a screw in type, I hate the plug type.

I used a hack saw and cut the flange, then I just pulled it out from the inside.

Sounds like it came out pretty easy MJ. I won't have much flange to cut b/c as I mentioned half the flange is gone already, so hopefully when I get rid of the other half it will slide out on the inside.

Just wanted to ask before I get myself in a perdicament ;) Thanks guys, helpful as always 8)

Take a flat screw driver and tap it up between the whole and the drain plug while bending it inward. Do this several times and it will just about fall out or just grab some of it with vice grips and pull it out. Thers not much you can screw up because the peice your removing is allready screwed up.

Stuck in a new flange myself for the plug type wich I hate as well. Hoping to simply put a screw in type right over top of the flange hole without having any gaps.

If I can't get it out I might leave it in there and re-glass a whole new boat around it ;D :o 8)

You might wanna bore it out a bit once you get the old one out. My new drains were 1"od, with a 1" drill bit, it was a real tight fit.
