Default Our dog Cleo

Well guys I suppose some of you have been thru this type of thing before but I just had to get this off my chest. Our beloved German Shepherd Cleo had to be put down today and it was one of the most dreaded things I was fearing. She was part of our family for 15 years now and I never cried so much over a darn animal before. Her hips and legs were so bad and she could hardly stand let alone walk. I had to carry her to the truck and carry her inside the Vet's so she could be put to sleep. Cleo was our son's dog who we got when our son was only five years old. I dreaded writing him in England at the Air Force Base to inform him that his beloved dog is now dead. I haven't heard back from him but I am sure he must be as devastated as we are.

I know some of you must be thinking get over it, it's just a stupid dog, but Cleo was a member of our family. I have killed many animals in my hunting days (never flinching an eye) but the hardest thing I have ever done was carry our dog into the Vet's knowing she was going to die shortly.

Sorry for my ranting post (100th post) this must be an omen. :'(

I had to go through it last SEPTEMBER, my dog of 13 years got a brain tumor and she went down almost overnight. It was the hardest thing I ever had to deal with losing her.

The worst part is seeing the animal in pain or suffering and knowing it's not getting better.
One of ours stopped eating and we knew it was time.
Hell he outlived the doctors granted time by 3 years.
Most marriages don't last 15 years, that was a good union.

Shawsee, the 1st time my children saw me cry was when our 14 yr old Lab, deaf and arthritic wandered off for the 1st time in his life and was killed instantly by the man who called me to tell me about it (I had put flyers all around the area) ... the next time I cried was a few years later after I held our 19 yr old Jack Russell in my arms while the doc put her down ...

There are two kinds of people...those who give a part of their hearts to their animals and those who won't ... you are apparently the former...and you are the better person for it...tell your son to be glad for the great memories he has of Cleo...those made him part of the man he is today ... of which I am sure you are very proud ...

The opportunity to live is truly worth dying for...and that goes for our pets as well...

like a lot of you guys, i been thrue it too. came home from work one day and found my best frien shot in the head. i'll never know who or why.

every mornin when i would let him out, gandalf (75lb pit bull who i couldnt sick on alpo) would run strait to my wifes rose bush and pee on it. she used to yell at him all the time to stop and he would just look at her, literaly smiling.
now gandalf is burried out back. i built a bit of a shrine for him. made a little hill framed with rr ties and built an arbor over it and planted HIS rose bush right in the middle.
got a little bench out there and every now and then i go out and have a beer or a fattie and just hang out with my dog. its been 4 years now and i am lucky enough to have one of his pups but, it aint the same. i miss that dog every day.
i am just thankfull that i have a place to chill with him still.

I've been there and done that once, and will be doing it again soon. Our dog (a mutt) was just diagnosed with diabetes and won't be here much longer. I know it won't be easy, but the last thing you want is to keep them around to long and have them suffer needlessly. You did the right thing and like it or not, it had to be done.

Thanks so much to all of you for the kind words from our entire family. You guys are truly the best there is and for total stangers you guys are great folks. I know Cleo had to go because it was her time and it sure wasn't easy for me to take her this morning but she suffered enough. I do not envy anyone who has or will be going thru this same ordeal. I never knew a man could cry over a dog like that and my eyes are still puffy & red tonight. My poor wife was and still is crying whenever she looks outside at Cleo's dog house. I can't even look out there and probably wont for quite sometime.

Thanks again to all of you,

The Chausse family
