I never knew how much difference a prop made until I tried a few different ones. Just switching the prop totally changed the handling characteristics of my boat. Some props give better bow lift or stern lift . . . My boat on the same day/same condition and load gained 9 mph on top end 43 to 52mph just by changing the prop. I finally ended up with a 21 pitch Mercury Offshore/Vensura prop.
Just for comparision . . . My old 1981 Merc 225 motor pushing the 20 seacraft 17 Rapture Stainless prop 5400rpm 43 17 Highfive Stainless Prop 6400rpm 47 19 Stock Aluminum Yamaha 5800rpm 48.5 19 Mercury Mirage Plus 5500rpm 50 21 Mercury Offshore 5500rpm 52.5

Even pitch to pitch a different prop can turn in different numbers...cup, blade shape and other factors differ...a 17 is not a 17 is not a 17... ;)...
