Murrells Inlet SC Fishing Report

Went out with the family over the weekend. Six of us. Fished Saturday and Sunday. Saturday fished the jetties and 3 mile, a couple flounder and sheepshead. No keepers. Sunday fished the jetties, 10 mile, 11 mile. My daughter did catch an 11 inch tog at the jetties - first for me! Ended up keeping 5 trout (weakfish) and an 18.5" flounder. A few other short flounder.

While fishing the jetties it was getting late in the day, like 6 pm. The place had cleared out pretty good, so basically had the place to ourselves. We were fising the weir or underwater rocks close next to the beach around high tide. Tip of the weir rocks had just gone under the water. Here comes a center console on full plane toward us. I'm thinking they are going to anchor up beside us. NO, they are heading to the ocean OVER the weir!! We screamed and waved our arms to no avail. We're just waiting for the huge crash. We didn't hear anything, but the boat stopped just on the other side. Worried, we pulled anchor and headed around the jetties to check on them. Get there and the guy is tying rigs. Asked if they were ok, they're like yeah, why? Told him about the underwater rocks. He seemed to appreciate the heads up. Said this was his first time fishing out of Murrells Inlet. They had a couple of kids on board. Probably 5 or 6 people. Thank the good Lord they didn't hit those rocks! Him being on plane he must have hit the swell just right. I'm guessing his lower unit missed the rocks by an inch (or less) lol.

Wow. Could've gone really bad.

Went to a cookout that a neighbor was throwing on Memorial Day, and one of the heavy topics was boating safety. Four members of a family killed in a 2 boat collision over the weekend in the Wilmington River near Savannah, due to another boat piloted by an alleged drunk driver. Every year it seems like there are more people piloting boats who are putting themselves and others in jeopardy due to ignorance/arrogance/drunkenness. Everyone be careful!
