Default Is the motor toast?

Motor is an 81’ merc 200

Went fishing for the first time in about two months yesterday. Motor idled fine, Pisa’s a good stream coming out of the harbor. Ran about a mile and a half and she lost power and shut down. She was blowing enough smoke from under the cowl we had the fire extinguisher ready.

Fast forward to getting her home. I took the cowl off hooked up the hose and fired her up. After shutting her down I ran a compression test #1 cylinder had no compression at all. The other 5 were all right around 120.

Called my mechanic and left a message. He’s hard to get ahold of and will probably be waiting a few days for a call back.

Could this be Anything simple?

Doesn't sound good to me, but Ferm or Spare would be the ones to ask. Hopeful for you

That’s kinda what I figured, only good news is I was planning on buying something else come spring anyway due to the condition of my hull. Still sad the see the V20 era end early even if it was only a few months early.

Here’s a minor update

Today I got around to pulling the water jacket and trying to pull the head.

The water jacket gasket was pretty much destroyed, there wasn’t much of it left. When I tried to pull the head the 4 bolts around that cylinder with bad compression were loose. By loose I mean they popped free with next to no pressure on the ratchet. The other bolts on the head I can’t budge.

Once I can get the head off I will report back

It has the three piece cowl, that I hate with a passion. Not sure if that’s considered the clamshell
