It's not a center console. Trying to get it back on the water, after it sat on the trailer for 3 years, well-tarped. Motor is running, but steering cable is frozen. I'm assuming there's no way to free it up? Hubby and friend pulled it, and it measures 18 ft. Recommendations on replacement?

Teleflex nfb but I thought it should be 17 feet, but if you measured it at 18 then got with that . And get the helm too the whole kit , clean out the steering tube and grease the new steering rod before install

I would disconnect cable from steering arm to verify problem is cable and not motor. Also could just be frozen in tilt tube

Unfortunately, there is no real way to say what the problem is. It might be frozen grease, it might be rust, it might be damage. You might be able to free it up by tapping on the end with a hammer, or you might not be. But the cost of a new unit, including the helm is cheap insurance that it will work properly for years to come. So why bother going through all the unnecessary hassle? Do the right thing and replace it.
And when you do replace it buy a Steersman nut for the end of it that will prevent all these problems in the future. https://steersman.com/html/whatitdoes.html If you are boating in saltwater get the Stainless type, if you are boating in only fresh water get the Aluminum type. Buy the type that fits the threads of the brand of engine you have. They work. I've been using them for years and never had a single steering cable go bad on me. (And they are cheap compared to the cost of a new cable). Good luck on the fix and happy boating.

Phat mentioned that the cable could be sticking in the tilt tube.
There is also another thing to check Old motors bind up from dry old grease at the top of the swivel shaft. With cable and/or link arm disconnected and motor down, you should very easily be able to swing the motor left/right by hand. If not, you should fix that.

Destroyer,I bought the helmsmen nut and wanted to put it on buy I tried and tried to get the screw off the port end and the whole tube would turn so I gave up , that should be the easiest thing to do but it would not come off, any advice on that? I have a helms nut in my draw that I can't use and want to .
