Default Corroded Bell Housing

Out on the Pond with the family when we started taking on water! ( Thank God it was the pond )!! At first I thought it was a breached bellows, only to find out it was a corroded Housing...now ... My mechanic I use ask me what I wanted to patch it with....... wait who's the mechanic? Its a good thing I only pay $65 an hour! Lol

anybody have any experience with this?

is it a JB Weld Job??

that's not the bell housing, that's the transom plate. either way, to do it right is going to be expensive. I've that happen before, the rubber hose rubs the aluminum, removing the paint/coating, allowing corrosion to start on bare aluminum. I've patched a few over the years, its in a low stress location. Ive used marine tex with decent luck. Make sure to clean the area good before applying. Keep in mind, this is a temporary repair. Start looking for a new transom plate, and or transom assembly, and start saving your money for the labor. I had one customer find a new take out complete transom assembly for $750 on ebay. I installed and put the engine back in, only to find out he didn't have the money to finish the repairs. We worked out a deal and I own that boat now

Permatex used to make an aluminum putty stick. Just cut a piece off, rolled it until mixxed, then stuck it in place. It actually held very tight, was even strong enough to be drilled and tapped if needed.

Default Transom Plate

Yea, I knew I was getting the name wrong! Lol He said it was a big job and had to remove the engine..... and he really didn't want to get into it. Just out of curiosity , how many hours / $ besides the parts? It maybe a case of finding a decent housing on ebay/ craigslist and doing it over the winter in my buddies barn.

What is the cause of the rot? Meaning a good rinsing down after salt water use would prevent? I have only had the boat for a few years.

it seems to be my lucky day... just found an 1985 without the engine/outdrive, and has the assembly plate already removed and in decent shape. Trailer is in decent shape with new tires.... unbelievable find...this will translate into "Free Assembly Plate" and maybe a few extra Washington for the project . Just 2.5hrs away.. well worth it!! Assuming 85 Alpha 1 will match an 1986 Alpha 1
