Question Info needed

Ok, someone just gave me a 1994 Force (Ya, ya, I know) 9.9 engine. It only has a few hours on it according to the PO (less than 100). It's got a brand new prop and impeller and only a few minor paint scratches. All in all it looks really nice. He said he was running the engine for a few hours and then she suddenly quit. I'm suspecting a carb problem caused by Ethanol fuel. Compression is fine, and it appears to have spark when I pull the starter cord, but the spark plug wires were off the plugs. One wire has a tag on it saying "1", the other wire is tagless. My question is, does anyone know which of the two cylinders is the number one cylinder? The top or the bottom?

Thanks Spare. I'll post up some pics somewhere along the line. Maybe even a link to a Youtube video showing it running if/when I get there. I've already id'ed some minor problems with the engine, including a few cracked wires from the safety kill circuit that might be causing intermittent loss of spark. If nothing else this will keep me busy in the garage until the onset of warmer weather when I can work outside on my V.
