Yesterday I was starting my motor in the driveway like I do before I head out to make sure all is good and I started it up and the although the engine was idling, for about 15 seconds the tach was floating from 3500 to 5000.. Engine was at a dead idle....like a switch the tach dropped straight down to 800 and was dead solid from there on out....
Should I do some preemptive repairs replacement or just let it ride and see if it happens again? Sign of a bad tachometer or something on the motor side? 1986 Yamaha with original Yamaha tach I am assuming.

not sure on yamaha, i'd make sure your motor is charging. should read 11.5-12.5 with nothing on & 13-14.5 when running.
wiser heads will be along |

I am going to check that....i just put a new battery in this year and had problems with it right before. I had just installed a brand new battery when this happened. I attributed it to the fact that i had left my fish finder on overnight but i need to check it out.

tap on the tach, if it doesn't straighten out, turn the selector on the back from the current setting to another, then turn it back to the original setting, if that doesn't work, send Reel some $
