Wtf?
My cousin has a 20 gal tank in his smaller boat and he didn't even fill it up and after he took it back out of the water he noticed a gas smell, so he went to take the gas cap off and it shot gas up in the air, he blew out the overflow and he doesn't think it was clogged but it could of been, but the strange thing is he now has more gas in it then he did when he put gas in it, he said maybe after sitting in the sun it expanded. WTF?
He said gas was coming out of the drain in the back of the boat onto the street and headed to the sewer, Thank god nobody drove by and tossed a cig out the window, it would of got his jeep and the boat. Any ideas?

When they built my tank in the boat (110 gal) They put the vent hose on the back of the tank, so when I have the boat in theyard I leave the bow up so the rain water washes out, but in the heat of the day the gas will exspand and drain out the vent, down the side of boat to the ground.
To stop this I just don't leave the bow way up, and stop filling the tank right to the top. When the pump clicks off its off, I don't try to even round off to the penny.

Happened to me one spring. Gassed up on the trailer in December to put away for winter. 90 degree day in April and the gas was running out the vent.

That's one of the reasons they put vent holes in tanks. It's not just to allow air to excape while filling the tank. It's also to allow for expansion and contraction from temperature plus it also allows fuel to flow to the engine without creating a vacuum in the tank.
As to the more gas in the tank then when first filled comment.. no, there isn't. Assuming the vent was closed, (and we know it was since you said the gas was under pressure) if you weighed the tank when it was first filled up and then after it sat in the sun, you would find the same weight..but what you would have is gas that took up more volume to achieve that same weight. The molecules in the gas got further and further apart as they absorbed heat, causing the gas to expand and take up more room.
