Emerald Isle 4-22-12 ...... SUNDAY ...... BLACKFIN on the PIER! ......
After 41 years here at the pier, I never thought I would see this! ............. MAURILLO MARQUEZ (Cary, NC) landed a 33"cl -- 21 lb. 12 oz. BLACK FIN TUNA on a PLUG! ........... Maurillo caught it on a Shimano STELLA 5000 with 20 lb. test line and a RED HEAD/WHITE BODY GOTCHA PLUG! ............. It is not unusual to see a BONITA; and ALBACORE are fairly common, but to see a school of BLACKFIN TUNA running along the pier is RARE! .......... After consulting with our NCDMF Officers, it was concluded that there are not any rules regarding BLACKFIN; however; there would be if Blackfins frequented the pier more often! ...... Highly unlikely! ............ This season has been (and probably will continue to be) one GOOD and especially UNUSUAL one! .............. Warm winter water temperatures have moved fish toward shore that would not necessary ever see the immediate coast! ............ The BLUEFISH, BLOWFISH, and SPANISH MACKEREL are making for a good day! ............. The current WATER TEMPERATURE has risen to 69*! ........ Could KING MACKEREL be far away? .............
