Pretty simliar engines actually. The 87 is a small bore, and the 88+ is a large bore. The large bore engines tend to be a bit more forgiving, but use a tad more fuel. The small bore engines ran a bit stronger though I thought from the ones I've run, but that small bore engines performance melted more than a few down and is why OMC only made em for 3 years. As for the physical differrences from a 140 to when they went to the 130, I believe all they did was use the smaller 120HP tuner on a 140 powerhead to give better bottom end and emissions(plus it made one less engine to offer for sale).

The 120-140HP engines were 90 degree loopers, not the 60 degree ones commonly refferred to as teh EAGLE series. They are heavy beasts though weighing in at what a 150 MERC 2.0L V-6 does.

what year did they start building the v4 eagle series? Didn't they keep building the old cross flow 88/90/115 up thur the late 90's? I had a 120 V4 Looper on my Mitchell, it was a torquey motor for sure

The EAGLE style 60 degree V-4's started in 91 I believe, but the older 90 degree cross flow's were available up through 95-96 time frame. The 120-140 is a much larger displacement and heavier built engine. The 120/140 V-4's and 250/300 V-8's were OMC's first large loopers, the V-6's didn't come out until 86, and then in 88 they all got redesigned to the large bore engines.
