Default Monday May 2, 2011 fishing report.

We did the yearly shake down cruise/fishing trip last Monday, sorry for the late report. We launched from Point Judith at 5:30 AM and off we went to Block Island(and no we didn't hit the Island, sorry Joe!) for some fluke fishing. The water was unlike I have ever seen with extremely calm conditions with literally no swells whatsoever, dead calm. Another thing I noticed is that we were the only boat out there almost the entire day. Not even one "six-packer" was out there which really is unsual. We get to Old Harbor at Block and set-up for drifting for fluke and fished for two hours without one single bite or hit! Discouraged, my buddy says,"let's go around to the south side of the Island at Black Rock and troll tube & worm for stripers". So off we went and started trolling and trolling and trolling with not one single hit! We trolled for two hours and nothing hit and both fish finders were barely marking fish. Very odd to say the least.

So discouraged we head over to Point Judith Light House with some green crabs figuring we would most definately hook up with some totaug. Tried that for another hour and a half with no results at all. not one single bite! Wow, so now I am besides myself because the skunk is in the boat and we cannot lose it. We decide to head over to Nebraska Shoals where I know the fluke are at, we always do well there. Drifted for 40 minutes and nothing, moved to the west over in front of Charlestown Breachway and same results.

The skunk apparently won out over the three of us and by 1:30 PM we were headed back to the barn. All we accomplished was burning up 25 gallons of fuel in the boat. I don't know what the problem was other then the water was 46 degrees and dead calm all day. We had a great time nevertheless and it was a safe fun trip. We are going to wait for a couple of weeks to make sure the water temps rise a bit instead of wasting fuel for nothing.

Not much of a good report but oh well, better luck next time.

For the first trip of the year, if the boat runs well and nothing weird happens. That is a success in my book.

There are always other days to catch the fish.

Of course maybe a lifetime of skunky trips makes me more accepting?

been there, well not actually those locations....

Its just the old "that's why they call it fishing and not catching".

Thanks for the report! Now I won't feel as bad if I can't make it put on Saturday...
