Default Need help identifying a 1990 Yamaha V6 outboard.

I recently acquired a 1990 Yamaha V6 outboard that has a cover with 200hp markings, and a tag on the mounting bracket that says 175ETXD. I've tried to figure out which it is by part numbers, but it seems the 175 and 200 used the same carbs and every other part I could think of checking.

Can any of you outboard gurus tell me if there is a way to determine the HP on this motor?

directly below 175 ETXD is a bunch of numbers. Those are the serial numbers for the motor. There should be the same numbers on the powerhead. The previous owner probably just swapped the cowling for a better looking one.

Thanks for the advise. I checked and the tag and welch/freeze plug numbers don't match. A Yamaha primary id number list found online indicates that the serial number on the plug is for a 225ETXD.

sweet. you have a sleeper just like me. Does your motor have manual choke or does it have Prime Start? Prime Start began in 1990. It is an automatic choke system that feeds the motor extra fuel till it warms up.

It has a manual choke. Serial # on the freeze plug is 750659, which, if I am reading this listing correctly - http://images.cmsnl.com/img/partslis...tech8_2fda.gif indicates it's a 1990. Did they start out 1990 with manual chokes and then swap over to Prime Start mid year or something?

does it have the 6k7 prefix? I don't think primestart was a mid year thing. Maybe its a 1989 225 which is called a v6 accel. The prefix is what designates the engine group.
