Default North Carolina Title question

Hopefully someone from NC can help answer this question...

I found a V20, price is right for its condition. The seller has a title from the previous owner, but he never titled it in his own name. I assume its not a big deal to for the seller to sign it over to me? Should any notary (like at a bank) be able to do it, or do I need to go to the dreaded NC license agency?

Thanks.

The "Proper" way to do it would be for the person selling the boat to go to the NC title agency and get the title changed to his name. That way you know (for your own protection) that he really is the owner and that he has the legal right to sell the boat.

Taking it to the extreme.. suppose he stole the boat and it happened to have the title in it? What happens to you if you try to title the boat and it comes back as stolen? At the very least you'd be out the money that you paid for the boat.

Not worth the risk if you ask me.

Default Not to the Plate Agency

In North Carolina boats are registered with the North Carolina Wildlife Commission. Here is there website: http://www.ncwildlife.org/License/Ve...tling_Info.htm

As far as the trailer is concerned it is registered with the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles. The dreaded licenses plate agancy. Here is their website:

Good luck and just to let ya know I work for the other half of NCDMV that everyone thinks is dreaded also: The Drivers License Office.

Your situation happens so often that they have a form to use.

If we knew the registration number, someone on here may be able to tell you for sure if it is hot or not.

Thanks everyone. I got the transfer title form and bill of sale notarized, just sent it off to the wildlife commission.

Looks like I finally own a V20! I would have picked it up today, except that my daughter (3-years old) insisted on my attention tonight. So i'll be picking it up Saturday instead. No rush, it will be a bit of work before its ready for the water.
