Thanks Nipper! I’m hoping that it goes to a good home. Over the years we’ve now owned 3 Wellcrafts, and loved every one of them. The first was a ’78 V-20 Step Lift, which we traded up to this ’86 Sportsman, and then I purchased a few years ago a ’02 18ft fisherman.
We liked this Sportsman so much that we repowered it. We went looking at the newer boats, but they all had those stupid euro transoms which kills all the room in the back for fishing. None of the manufacturers give you enough room to walk around the front, or storage in the floor for ropes, anchors, and other items. This boat has more storage than two boats! After looking at a number of other boats, (using this one as a measuring stick) we just didn’t want to switch.
Unfortunately due to my father’s knees, we had to get something with a hard top which makes it easier to get into the boat from the dock for him. I wish that I had this engine on the transom of his newer boat, as it’s great on gas and oil. I’ve got to say that this Wellcraft model was popular for good reason. This boat’s a rocket! I can’t tell you how many times we’ve come back from fishing and out run other boats while not even pushing on it. The room in the back is huge and it’s got nice high sides. When I come down our lagoon, I miss seeing her classic looking hull with that blue stripe! I almost know that some day I’m going to be looking for another one of these boats.
