Default I'm going to look at a V20 today ,need help!

Hi everyone. I just joined the site because I have decided to purchase a V20. I am in the process of looking at several, but I am a total babe in the woods when it comes to buying a used boat. Can I get a tip or two from you folks on what to look for so I don't buy a bad boat ? I would like to know how to how to check the transom and important structural things, plus anything else you think would be helpful. Thanks a bunch.

The fellers on here always say to check the transom by standing on the motor and bouncing a bit to see if you get any flexing or popping sounds.

If it does then it was bad. Just remember that most outboards big enough to push a V weigh in around 400 pounds, and they put at least that much pressure on the transom when they are under power. Also walk on the deck all over and pay close attention to the floor around the hinges in the floor hatches for flexing.

Rather than standing on the motor, I'd say tilt it up and apply your weight to the foot a little at the time until you got it all on there...listening for a snap-crackle-pop which is a dead giveaway for a bad transom...if you hear very little or nothing at all, you gotta good one...

Default great info

I took your advice, I really appreciate all the help. I bought the boat. Everything seems to be ok. I think I got a great deal. I paid 1500 for it 1984 v20 steplift with a great running 150 Mariner on it. It needs some love, that's for sure, but it came with a great trailer, all the safety gear, an extra external gas tank already set up for emergencies, radios, fishfinder, battery tender, and 2 new deep cycles, plus a whole bunch of other stuff. lol ..... I could probably part the engine out for what I have in it. I am very happy. Time to get to work! Any advice you guys can give me as a new owner would be much appreciated. Thanks

Just keep the wallet out of your pocket, cash in one hand with a credit card in the other. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Welcome to the site, I as well as every other member love these boats. You can get a lot of great ideas and help here.
