Some really cool information on OMC’s rotary racing history.

I've often wondered about sitting a mazda one on end to replace an outboard power head, wonder if it would work. When I lived in Raleigh, I used to know teh giuys at Team Highball, they were the factory sponsored Mazda race team for a long time(mazda ended up moving everything to california), I think they still hold the record of most wins with a single chassi at Daytona(18 I think). But these guys used to make stupid power out of a 13B, now that the 14(four rotor) is available salvage, it opens up more posibilities. Next tiem I'm up there, I'm going by their old shop and inquire about my idea

i think advances in and lightning up piston engines is what killed off the rotary. i read that article on s and F and its a really good one. i dont know if you know this, they have a couple of mud boat builders that use mazda rotaries in the mudboats. in mud boats its not the weight that really matters as much as the amount of space the engine takes up, so that make the rotary a prime candidate. my good friend actually has one in his mud boat. i think its a 170 hp i would have to check. but it definitely out performs the other popular engines to install in that size boat i.e. subaru's and 4.3 chevy's, toyota 22r's. the rotary;s are just a tad more expensive but they run.

Weird . . . one of our offices at UC Davis was on Research Park Drive. If I had only known.
