I was watching the History Channel the other day and they were talking about the USS Enterprise(CVN-65), It was the first nuclear powered aircraft carrier. After it was compleated, it was considered too expensive to build nuclear carriers and several under construction at the time were converted to conventional power.The idea of nuclear power was almost abandoned. Now a days, it wouldn't seem right to build a carrier that wasn't nuclear

They carry 2.4 MILLION gals of fuel in their bellies...that's for the aircraft on board...
