Friday 8/8 - First trip to the salt for my buddies new 22ft Clearwater CC and we got a late start due to some wheat soda abuse that happened the night before. The crew is me, Slick and Cory. I think we hit the water at like 11 or so. Anyway we want kings so we head to an area of live bottom 13 miles off the rocks. Get there and not a boat in sight....and not a king in sight. We burned up about an hour trying and no luck so we head back in to do some spanish fishing. It was a slow pick but we stayed at it catching 7 nice sized 2 to 3 lb fish.

Well, with some prodding I'm able to peel Slick's @ss out of bed but no such luck for Cory - he decides to get some beauty sleep. ![]() ![]() ![]() Slick and I don't have a plan. On the way out we started looking at the charts - its flat calm and supposed to be a beatiful day. I see a couple of spots that I've heard good things about before but never been to. The two spots are 27 - 30 miles from the rocks, so I convince captain Slick that this is the place to be and we head toward the inlet. On the way we are about to round an area that I know to be pretty shallow at dead low and the motor makes a noise. Sounded like we had hit bottom.....but the finder says 6ft?? Turns out we did not hit bottom at all. The engine was not getting fuel for some reason. I ask captain Slick if he pumped the squeeze ball before he cranked it - the reply is, "No, I haven't done that since I've had it." Well the ball was tight but it felt like it was full of air. We manage to crank it long enough to get over to a dock at the marina and troubleshoot the issue. After much ball squeezing we are able to get the motor to drink again. At this point we both start to question our decision to head off 30 miles but do so anyway. And man was it worth it. Took about 1 hour and 15 minutes to reach the destination. We were greeted by a fleet of 15 other boats when we got there. Excitement turned to disapointment when we had trolled our spread of dead cigars for 1.5 hours with no luck. I actually made that statement and not a minute later a reel starts to sing but quickly comes unglued. Then his swimming partner got hungry and ate one of the cigars and game on. We boated 5 fish all small with only 2 keepers, lost another 2 or three keepers and all in all had about 15 strikes. We arrived on the spot at 10:30 am, left at 2:30 am for the 1 hr 30 mph ride home and had a blast!! ![]() ![]() ![]() Grilled Spanish...mmmm.....see Recipe Section and last post "Hey Blue" by Nipper for the cooking instructions......
