Another rod you can pick up at very reasonable prices is the Shakepear Ugly Sticks, they have dozens of variations and you can find them for extrodianry prices sometimes. They are work horse rods that cast well have a soft to medium action and are the toughest rod made.
And the Okuma reels I have had for three years now are going strong and have held up to the salt well. Their drags seem to be smooth and even and the price was excellent. There are better reels out there for sure, I have a couple but not for the price.
