When I fixed the hole in my boat for the bracket I put cloth between the two pieces of ply. But like air I am no excpert either. But it is solid as a rock!!

I also used some screws to hold all toghter, after it was dry I took them out, did not want anything to rust in there.

You are doing a good job for a first timer!!
