Re: Possible V Owner
Welcome to the board!!
I like Yamaha and had a 89 175hp, They are good motors!!
But with any used motor you have no idea how its been treated, make sure you ask questions!!
1. ask to do a compersion test, all shoub be over 100 and be with in 10 of each other.
Yamaha like to carbon up also, so if its in the low 100 a decarb can bring thwm numbers back up.
2. Ck the lower unit for oil, you be surprised how many used motors have water in them!!
3. Before 1994 Yamaha used steel for its shifting rods, and they rot out. Replacement has to be done by removing the power head, and depending if your motor guy likes you or not the price can be as low as $500 to as high as $1000 to replace!
You can look but not always see the rot down by the cavtion plate. There is a small opening were you will see the rod. But most times it is rotted just below and hard to see.
4. I think Yamaha has one of the best iol injection, but as with any you never know when it will fail!!
Ask me I know! :'( So keep it maintained always or disconnect and mix.
With any used motor you take your chances, but there are great deals out there for us poor guys in a rich mans sport!!
Good Luck!!
