Ipe (Ironwood) is alot like teak with the following exceptions.

It is about 1/3 the price.
It is about twice the weight.
It is harder to machine. (you need powerful woodworking tools with carbide blades and bits.)
It is usually darker in color.
Grain is straight like teak and has few knots.
It will not burn, float, and it may not ever rot.

Ipe is used for premium decking and is IMHO the best material for that purpose. It now being used for decking on the Atlantic City boardwalk. It weathers like teak to a silver grey.
