I got PADI certified in the late 1990s. I finished my open water certification in Barbados, and I continued to dive for about 10 years before I gave it up.
I loved diving in warm waters while on vacation... Barbados, Mexico and Hawaii on my honey moon.
Seeing the reefs and sea life are the best.
Night diving can be fun too. You focus much more in the minutia directly in front of you.
I gave up diving because I regularly got sea sick. It just wasn't fun doing that at 60 to 80 feet down, although the fish didn't mind the extra food.
I prefer shallower dives... 60 feet or less. 30 to 50 feet is ideal for me. As you go deeper, you use your air faster, and increase the need for a safety stop on the way up so that you can safely out-gas nitrogen from your body.
Spending time scuba diving as family would have to be awesome!
