Since there is no vaccine for the common cold, it's not like taking cold medicine for a cold. It's more like taking a polio vaccine for the poliovirus. You may not have the scar on your arm from the vaccinations many of us remember from childhood, but control of polio transmission has been a huge success story around the world. If you don't want to get the vaccine, don't. The rest of us who are willing to get the vax will contribute to the herd immunity which will reduce your risk of a second infection. It's not as sure a course of action as you getting vaccinated, but it improves your odds of survival without the risk of experiencing some unknown effect from receiving the vaccine itself.

For me, I'm about a week out from my second Moderna shot. Almost 70 yo with few symptoms for either shot. Got to hug two of my grandkids for the first time in months without them freaking out about how they were going to kill their grandparents. When I was working, I operated the life support equipment you see in all those news clips about the virus. Dying on the ventilator with no family around for comfort or support is not the way I'd like to exit. The vaccine is worth the risk to me.
