Theres 2 big reasons we use gunnel rod holders. 1st is when not in use they're virtually gone as theres only a little portion that sticks up above the gunnel. The 2nd reason is we tend to deal with alot bigger fish. You NEED a SOLID rod holder if you're trolling and a 50+lb fish hits while trolling. You can be dealing with fish that hit so hard, that a slight miscalculation on your drag setting can cause a rod to shatter on the strike. So you need a stout rod holder to handle it.
