The way it was once explained to me... and I stress that I DO NOT KNOW if this is correct or not... was that you should think of a battery as a sort of reservoir for the electricity that your alternator is making. Now your alternator is going to continue to make electricity as long as your engine is running.. but if you disconnect the battery all that electricity that would normally be stored in the battery has nowhere to go and you run the risk of burning out your diodes and other things. So as a safety feature if the battery is disconnected the engine will stop. Now, again, I don't know if that's true or not... it's simply something I was told a while back.
