Truthfully, I don't know the "proper" answer .... but logic says that hydraulic cylinders should be filled with hydraulic fluid. So as long as you use the right type it really shouldn't matter if you use OMC, Mercury, Shell, or Kmart. A fluid cannot label itself as Dexron I or II or ABC or anything unless it meets certain specs. So as long as the fluid meets the called for specs I would think it's fine to use. (And I've been using power steering fluid in my 200HP Mercury's trim cylinders for several years now with no problems)
